Where to Go in CT: The Firestone Art Studio & Cafe Edit

If you have never been to the Firestone Art Studio & Cafe in Manchester, CT, you are truly missing out. Even after moving out of Manchester, I still go back for visits – frequently. I didn't know what this shop really was until I got a gift card for my birthday a couple of years ago, but now it's my go-to spot for dates, catching up with friends, and for shopping. Not only can you browse their insane and ever-changing stock to paint your own pottery, but you can also grab a latte or a quick bite to eat at their cafe; seriously, the perfect combination. Not to mention that they have a corner of the shop stocked with goods from local artists, which is about as tempting as it can get – think candles, stickers, stationery, trinkets, and so much more.

Let’s talk about the fact that Daztar truly understood the assignment this Valentine’s Day; as much as going out to dinner or seeing a movie is really nice, there is something refreshing about sitting and doing an activity where you can casually chat. I am a lady who likes to take her time – I normally spend about two and a half hours painting, and of course I'm chatting away the whole time! It’s a place that has that rare "trendy but welcoming" energy that makes you want to move in, start a tab, and never leave.

Entering My "Functional Art" Era

Now that we have really settled into our apartment in Cheshire, we are lucky enough to be in a space where we have everything we need. Now that we've moved past the stage of raiding our parent's houses and hand-me-down supplies, we have been slowly replacing things (especially in our kitchen) with new, hand-painted versions that we picked because we really loved it.

Not only are there multiple bookshelves worth of options to choose from, but there are so many functional pieces. So far, we have painted bowls, plates, tea light holders, spoon rests, and some custom dog bowls for Yoshimi, of course. And that isn't even counting all the things I painted as gifts for family and friends. The options are pretty much limitless, and honestly, it is quite hard just to pick one thing.

Not Just a Studio; It’s a Whole Vibe

This Firestone Cafe is so cozy; one of the reasons I love this place so much is that its a relaxing, creative reset. No matter what I have been working on in the background, I'm always so inspired seeing all of the unpainted pottery and glaze colors to choose from.

Pro tip: make a reservation to paint, especially on the weekend, to make sure you get a spot to sit. Every single time I come here, I end up spending two and a half hours or so painting. If that sounds crazy to you, just wait – every single person I've brought here ends up getting way more invested in their project than they ever anticipated.

It's not just the pottery that keeps me coming back, though. The Firestone Cafe is way more than that:

  • The Lattes: First off, the drinks here rock. I'm not a coffee gal, but I can definitely vouch for pretty much any other bev. You can’t create masterpieces on an empty tank, and their lattes are top-tier fuel for the creative chaos.

  • The Snacks: Not only can you grab little snacks and baked goods, but you can get breakfast and lunch; either to go, or while you paint! This is the easiest way to convince Daztar to go with me (he is very food motivated).

  • The Artist Shop: This is where things get dangerous for my bank account. They have a local artist shop that is so well-curated it hurts. Every time I go, I find something I "need." From hand-poured candles to prints to stationery and puzzles, I’ve already collected a small gallery's worth of local treasures and trinkets.

  • The Social Energy: This place has that perfect social hum; just loud enough so that your conversation isn't on full blast, but quiet enough to chat with your friends. It’s where you go to get a creative reset without feeling like a hermit.

A Much-Needed Digital Detox

There’s something so incredibly grounding about getting your hands dirty and forcing your brain to focus on just one thing for a few hours. In my world, where so much of my life is digital, screens are constantly glowing, and I’m perpetually three seconds away from an accidental scroll-hole, sitting there with a paintbrush and making something tangible is a total system reboot.

My apartment is slowly becoming a Firestone showroom, and I’m not even mad about it. Every time I "just go to paint," I end up wandering to their local artist shop and leaving with something iconic. I’ve picked up everything from cute local travel books to stickers and prints... It’s dangerous for my bank account, but my aesthetic has never been better.
